Black/Chocolate Litter

Born 10/11/2010 - None Available

Sire: FC Way-Da-Go Call of the Wild (Drake) is a six year old chocolate Labrador Retiever field champion who is part of a new generation of chocolate Labs proving that they are able to perform at the highest levels. His sire is FC AFC Cuda's Blue Ryder MH, and his grandsire is FC AFC CFC CAFC Barracuda Blue MH, making this one of the few instances in Labrador history with three successive generations of chocolate field champions. The other instance is Drake's litter mate, AFC Wing Magic's Louisiana Roux MH, who sired the all-time high point National Derby Champion, a chocolate female named Upon the Winggs of an Answered Prayer. FC AFC Cuda's Blue Ryder MH's dam, Higher Grounds Helen Keller, brings in a different line of chocolate field performance. She was a litter mate to NFC AFC Storm's Riptide Star, the only chocolate National Champion in U.S. field trial history.

Drake qualified for the 2009 National Retriever Championship and for the 2010 National Amateur Retriever Championship, and performed well in both. As of now, Drake has three open wins with 15.5 open points, and two amateur wins with 12.5 amateur points. He is a well built, handome dog, with a good temperament and solid genetics.

Dam: Yardley Labs Ms T-Maxx (Misty) is a 3 year old daughter of FC AC High Tech CEO (Gates), who comes from one of the most successful Labrador litters of all time, a breeding between 2xNAFC FC 2xCNAFC Ebonstar Lean Mac and NAFC FC Hattie McBunn. Six of the pups from Gates' litter went on to become field champions. They, in turn, have sired or given birth to another 23 field champions. At 64 pounds when at training weight, Misty is a powerful and beautiful black Lab who is always eager to retrieve, play, or snuggle. She is quiet in the house, and wonderful with other pets. She loves children and is very gentle, although her youthful energy and size can sometimes intimidate smaller children until they realize that she will follow their commands. In the field she is focused and eager. Her line manners are excellent, and her blinds and marks solid.

Misty ran field trials at the Derby level in 2008 and accumulated six points with second, third and fourth place finishes along with four Judges Awards of Merit (JAMs) despite being unable to compete for most of the latter part of her eligibility because of two freak injuries and a false pregnancy. In 2010, after being out of training for a year, Misty has accumulated a fourth place finish, a Reserve JAM and a JAM competing at the Qualifying level in field trials. While almost never entered in hunt tests, Misty did pass two Senior tests. She should be running in amateur all age stakes next year. Misty's hips are rated OFA Excellent with PennHIP scores placing her in the 90th percentile for Labs. Her elbows are OFA Normal, her eyes are clear of genetic defects, and she is CNM and EIC clear. Based on parentage, all puppies in this litter will be both CNM and EIC Clear. Approximetely half the pups will be black and half chocolate. All will be chocolate factored and some may be yellow factored as well.

Pups from this litter should be capable of performing competitively in field trials and hunt tests. They should also make outstanding hunting dogs and companions around the house. While both parents are quiet in the house and good with children, these pups should be highly athletic and need families that will provide them with training and lots of exercise. Pups are covered by a 28 month guarantee against genetic problems of hips, elbows, eyes, CNM (Centronuclear Myopathy) and EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse) as well as a general guarantee that they are in good health at the time of delivery. Pups will receive early neurological stmulation. They will have dew claws removed, be vet examined and have initial shots, and be well socialized with children, adults, and other animals. They will be exposed to birds, water, gun fire, crates, travel in vehicles, and leashes and collars.

Breeding dogs does not always work out as planned. This breeding was an artificial insemination. However, timing was probably off and only one puppy was born. I will be keeping that puppy, tentatively named Yardley Labs Volare da Sola, for myself. She is a very large (no cometition for food) chocolate female Lab who seems to be developing a very strong personality.

*** Sola at One Week ***

At one week of age, Sola is continuing to grow at a rate far beyond what is normally seen when large numbers of puppies are competing for mom's attention. On day seven she was 2 1/2 pounds and today, day 9, she is over 3 pounds already. She constantly moves around the oversized whelping box like a little train, pushing everything aside as she marches on.

*** Sola at Birth ***

Unfortunately, Labs were not built to have just one puppy. When x-rays confirmed that Misty had only one pup inside, the next question was would it be too large to be born naturally and would Misty even go into labor on schedule? After getting lots of opinions, I made the decision with my vet to deliver Misty's puppy by c-section. So, on Monday October 11, Yardley Labs Volare da Sola (Italian for "flies on her own") was born. Not counting her tail, she was about 9-10 inches long at birth and weighed 22 ounces, larger than any Lab puppy I have ever had before.

I had already returned all deposits when it became apparent that Misty's litter would be very small. However, I didn't know how small until a few days before the birth. One of my primary objectives for the breeding was to get an outstanding chocolate female out of my dog Misty (who carries all three colors). I wanted a dog that I could compete and that could ultimately become part of my breeding program. However, with only one pup inside, there was only a 25% chance that I would get the chocolate girl I wanted. When the vet technician called to tell me that my puppy had been born, I asked for specifics and was told it was a girl. I then asked about the color and was told she wasn't sure, but black or brown. I didn't know she was chocolate until she was placed in my hands a few minutes later. These pictures were taken when I got her home and she was still only about two hours old.
